WEST VILLAGE FLAT

Located in Detroit’s historic West Village neighborhood, this 1914 home underwent a meticulous renovation in spring 2023, introducing modern updates and carefully selected elements inspired by the owner’s love for contemporary aesthetics. A minimalist black and cream color palette runs throughout the house, supported by the warmth of rich wood and brass accents. With limited square footage, creativity was essential to craft a contemporary color blocked kitchen complete with a pantry and wet bar. We reconfigured the layout by moving the existing bathroom and introducing two curved archways that connect the kitchen to the dining room. This transformation not only expanded the space but also created a seamless transition, incorporating a bar and pantry in between. An inefficient vestibule was removed to make space for a much needed powder room. Additionally, closing an archway allowed us to create a private entrance to the main en-suite from the primary bedroom. We also tranformed a smaller bedroom into a bathroom, which now features a spacious soaking tub and separate shower. This renovation breathes new life into the home, seamlessly blending modern design with classic charm. The result is a functional and stylish living space that embodies contemporary living while acknowledging its history

Primary Bathroom

When our client expressed their desire for a serene primary suite with a spa-like bathroom, we embarked on a transformative journey. We converted an existing guest bedroom into their dream space, strategically closing an archway and introducing an entrance from the newly designed walk-in closet. This rejuvenating spa bath brings tranquil desert vibes to the heart of Detroit’s West Village. In this new space, a modern soaking tub by Oceania takes center stage, inviting you to unwind and rejuvenate. The original closet has been reinvented into a deep, gracefully arched niche, seamlessly blending functionality with style. Now, this spa-inspired oasis also features brushed brass finishes by California Faucets, tumbled marble mosaic floor tiles, and dazzling Kelly Wearstler light fixtures, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication. This inviting bath was completed in April 2023.

Kitchen

Nestled in Detroit’s historic West Village neighborhood, this 128-square-foot kitchen, meticulously completed in the spring of 2023, beautifully marries modern aesthetics with organic textures. The redesign of this space involved the strategic relocation of a bathroom to make way for a stylish butler’s pantry and bar area. Curved archways now seamlessly connect the dining room to the kitchen. One of the standout features of this kitchen is the striking contrast created by the matte black base cabinets, appliances, black sink and black granite countertop against the backdrop of cream-colored upper cabinets, hood and floating shelves. This color-blocking technique not only adds visual interest but also gives the kitchen a contemporary and sophisticated look. Japanese mosaic tiles in graphite and cottonwood from Ann Sacks function as a visual bridge between the distinct color-blocked areas, adding a unique texture and pattern to the space. The addition of brass hardware and plumbing fixtures adds warmth and sophistication to the overall design, creating a subtle shimmer that complements the matte black and cream color palette and infuses the kitchen with a touch of luxury.

Powder Room

While initially not part of our original design scope for the first floor, we serendipitously uncovered an opportunity to enhance the layout during our exploration of the existing floor plan. This led us to introduce a stunning new powder room. The focal point of this powder room is a beautiful Ibere countertop, adorned with an elegantly curved backsplash, that sits atop a charcoal and walnut floating vanity. The Kohler vanity, featuring an extra-large storage drawer, conveniently houses all the essentials for this intimate space. A sleek black vessel sink pairs seamlessly with brushed brass fixtures, creating a harmonious blend of contemporary and classic aesthetics. Adding to the ambiance, two striking black and brass pendants cast a warm, inviting glow over the space. To tie it all together, a black-framed mirror with gracefully curved corners mirrors the design elements of the backsplash, ensuring a cohesive composition. This new powder room in Detroit’s West Village was completed in April 2023.
